What is Easter?

The origins of Easter

Easter is one of the most important Christian and Jewish holidays. It celebrates the resurrection of Christ, preceded by Holy Week, the last part of Lent. This week begins on Easter Sunday, following the full moon on March 21.

Easter is thus celebrated on the Sunday following the spring full moon. Beyond the Catholic religion, it's the resurrection of Nature that's celebrated.

The custom in France

The most widespread custom in France is to eat chocolate. These chocolates are often shaped like eggs or rabbits. According to legend, they are brought by Easter bells and hidden in nature.

For children (and adults too!), the egg hunt is on! Like Christmas and Halloween, Easter is a highlight of the year for children.

Other traditions include Easter lamb and soup kitchens. In France, volunteers from Secours Populaire Français, accompanied by believers, often distribute meals to the most needy.

All about egg hunts

The principle of the egg hunt

For Easter, parents traditionally hide chocolate eggs around the house, apartment or garden. Then it's up to the kids to find as many eggs as they can, and enjoy!

How does an Easter egg hunt work?

There are different types of egg hunt. The simple version is to let each child go in search of his or her own booty. Variations include treasure hunts, treasure hunts, large egg hunts, tombola with free entertainment, Easter games...

During a big hunt, children can work together. Once they've found every egg, rabbit and chick, they'll have to find the golden hen.

The golden hen hunt involves solving a riddle. Hunters have to answer riddles and find clues.

Where to go on an Easter egg hunt?

At the educational farm

During the Easter vacations, take your child to an educational farm! Better than a zoo, they'll be up close and personal with the animals. And what could be more fun than looking for eggs among the farm animals?

Many farms open their doors on Easter morning and invite you to come and hunt for Easter chocolates! The hunt is for children only.

Tree climbing

One of the most original ideas for Easter outings is a day on the accrobranche! Hunting for eggs high up in the air is much more fun than in a public garden or park!

Enjoy a variety of routes, suitable for young and old alike. The sports complex's instructors will have hidden treats all over the site, in the trees and in the paths.

At the children's playground or elsewhere

During the Easter vacations, many castles open their doors. Take your children on an egg hunt in a castle park !

The Château de Vaux le Vicomte and the Château de Breteuil welcome you by reservation. You and your family will rub shoulders with deer and ponies as you hunt for bell treasures in a fortress setting. You can also enjoy an egg hunt in the labyrinth of a castle open to the public.
