Ceramics and pottery workshop: everything you need to know about this manual activity 🏺

Are you a fan of creative hobbies? Take part in a ceramics workshop that will enable you to model magnificent terracotta pottery and sculptures. Throughout the year, all over France, potters and ceramists run workshops and group courses, for adults and children.

A ceramics workshop can be run all year round, in a group class, on weekends or during the week. It's an ideal activity to treat yourself, or to offer as a gift to a loved one.

The different types of pottery & ceramics workshops

A ceramics workshop is nothing less than a pottery class in which a ceramist teaches you the techniques of working with clay. After defining your project, he or she will guide you in the creation of your object. There are several types of workshop.

Wheel-throwing workshop

In front of a wheel, you'll learn how to make a clay bowl.

Modeling workshop

You'll make pieces using brushes, plates and modeling techniques.

Ceramic painting workshop

Draw and decorate already-fired objects.

Kintsugi workshop

Learn how to repair a broken object with gold. This is a very fashionable Japanese technique.

Raku workshop

Also of Japanese origin, this technique involves firing your pottery at low temperature.

At the end of a ceramics workshop, trainees either go home with their creations or wait a few days for the ceramist to kiln-fire their work.

How does a pottery workshop work?

Step 1️⃣

Most workshops take place in the ceramist's own studio. After a quick briefing on the workshop and a welcome drink, you begin to learn the techniques of the workshop in question.

Step 2️⃣

The ceramist will explain step-by-step the techniques to be followed, and will pass among the participants to offer advice. Depending on the workshop you've chosen, you can learn to master throwing, knead clay or paint ceramics.

Step 3️⃣

For workshops requiring firing, the craftsman will dry and then fire your piece, which you can collect a few days later.
